Design Brief — Layari

Layari is a narrative-driven couture piece created exclusively for Dananeer Mobeen for the premiere of Mera Lyari. Inspired by her role as a young football player, the outfit reflects the journey of a girl fighting for her right to play in a society where women are often denied freedom especially in spaces like sport.

Crafted in an off-white silk-based wash n wear, the ensemble is rooted in quiet luxury. The fabric’s soft sheen and structured fall create a refined base, allowing the narrative elements of the outfit to stand out with clarity and purpose.

The silhouette is defined by an exaggerated Balochi shalwar, reimagined with dramatic volume and fluid drape. Its movement mirrors the rhythm of football dynamic, unrestricted, and powerful symbolizing freedom in motion. Paired with a structured shirt featuring oversized collars and sculpted sleeves, the upper form introduces strength and authority, embodying resistance against societal constraints.

At the heart of Layari lies its most powerful element the corset. Crafted from raw, textured jute, it introduces an intentional ruggedness, grounding the look in the reality of Lyari. The corset is intricately adorned with multicoloured symbolic prints and hand embellishments that directly reference the world of the film and the culture it represents.

Motifs of footballs and female players in motion narrate the central struggle women claiming their right to the field. Architectural elements and streetscapes echo Lyari’s environment, while rickshaws, palm trees, and local iconography root the design in a lived, everyday reality. At its center, an emblem-like composition ties these elements together, almost like a badge of identity signifying pride, resilience, and belonging.

Each symbol is not decorative, but declarative. Together, they transform the corset into a visual archive of resistance, ambition, and cultural memory.

More than a premiere look, Layari becomes an extension of Mera Lyari’s narrative. As worn by Dananeer, it transforms the red carpet into a continuation of the story where fashion becomes voice, and couture becomes a statement.

Layari ultimately stands as a tribute to every girl who dares to step forward, to play, and to claim space in a world that tries to hold her back.
